Five things separate a strong hire from a résumé that reads well. Use these as your scorecard criteria.

SkillWhy it matters
TechnicalKnowing how to set up and operate cameras and other technical equipment represents the foundation for Directors of Photography. They must also distinguish different types of cameras, lenses, monitors, lights, and other features of photography in order to produce and capture the best images.
LeadershipDirectors of Photography must demonstrate strong leadership abilities because they are in charge of the entire camera crew. Leadership helps them guide crew members toward mutual goals, provide accurate instructions, and train new crew members. If Directors of Photography set themselves up as leaders, success is guaranteed.
CommunicationDirectors of Photography must have great communication for this position. They use communication to collaborate with people on the set, such as directors, producers, gaffers, assistants, designers, and others, to ensure everyone is on the same page. Editing and CreativityWhen Directors of Photography combine these two skills, they can create visually and aesthetically pleasing scenes, images, and shoots for the project. Creativity allows them to use various colors, effects, lighting techniques, and other elements, while editing in the post-production process helps them blend all components attractively.
Decision-MakingDirectors of Photography should have decision-making skills that can help them in frequently fast-paced shooting environments. They use this skill to make important decisions about visual styles, which special effects, lighting, colors, filters, and other elements to use, and how to conduct post-production editing processes to create engaging and proper scenes.
